Composed in 1884 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ludvig Holberg (1684-1754), a Norwegian humanist playwright, The Holberg Suite, Op. 40, is a collection of five movements based on eighteenth century dance forms. Grieg, in this exciting work, exemplifies the late nineteenth century style using musical forms from the preceding century.
The five movements can be played separately or as a suite. The complete work is about 20 minutes long.
